Skylark By: Meagan Spooner – Free Online
Skylark is a good book by author Meagan Spooner.
Debut author Meagan Spooner stands out in the YA literary scene with this thrilling blend of fantasy and science fiction.
Lark Ainsley waited years to be picked for the harvest when a child’s magic was cast to power the City. A rite of passage, marking the end of childhood. However, when Lark’s name is finally called, she discovers she is a renewable, with enough magic to power the City for the rest of her life. Now, to escape being a human battery, Lark must flee the City, cross the Wall, and enter the unknown.
Magic is a fickle thing. An open world and full of magic can see it broken and abused. A world without open magic could see it persecuted and hunted. But what about a world that needs magic and has lost it? In Meagan Spooner’s Skylark, magic is something everyone needs, but only a few can create it.
Lark has never been harvested, and at her age, that is extremely rare. When the city decides to harvest your magic to power the protective wall and their various machines (including pixies – small bug-like machines used to capture citizens if they break the rules), it’s an honor for you to give up your magic and help the city. When Lark finally prepared to harvest, her experience was something very different. They keep her and harvest her magic over and over again – no one needs more than one harvest because no one can Replicate. When Lark, nearly exhausted of everything that makes up her Lark, stumbles across a woman trapped and drained of magic, she realizes this will be her fate – one that can be re-created. The generator is held and hooked to the power cord, sucked dry. When one of the guards gave her the key to escape, she didn’t hesitate to take her outside the wall. And she’s heard stories all her life about what lies beyond the walls.
The idea of the story is really great, and the whole plot is super engaging, but the story is short and ends up being really boring for me. I completely lost interest and had to try to finish it. I’m disappointed it could have been great!
