Super Powereds: Year 1 – Free Full Audiobook
Super Powereds: Year 1 is a literary fiction book by author Drew Hayes.
Knowledge is power.
The motto of Lander University, if it weren’t for it was snatched and used to death by others, was long before the school was founded. Because while Lander offers a full range of courses to nearly all students, it also offers a small number of special classes for a select few. Lander is home to the Hero Certification Program, a curriculum designed to develop students with superhuman abilities, commonly known as Superman, into full-fledged Heroes. This year’s freshman year is more special. They have a secret beyond their reach – a secret they must protect even from their classmates.
For every person in the world with an ability they can control, there are three people who lack such skill. These lesser super beings – Powereds, as they were called – were always seen as burdens and second-class citizens. Although there has been much research in this area, no one has ever succeeded in turning a Power Person into a normal human, let alone a Superman.
I described Super Powereds to my wife as “Harry Potter with superheroes”. I think this comparison is quite appropriate as it is essentially a fairy tale about five young people who transform overnight from being despised by society into individuals of elite ability, extremely powerful.
I think this book is made easier to understand than some similar books, because the setting is very similar to our world, but with a slight twist. So society’s reaction (e.g. Superheroes treated like rock stars) is quite interesting and believable.
The story tells a lot about what young people learn, and how they mature from an emotional and personality perspective. I can see some other readers likely wanting to add a little romance in, but I’m satisfied with the extent to which it is provided.
With the advent of the Kindle and millions of books being published each year, it became increasingly difficult to separate the wheat from the husk. And reviews aren’t always reliable, especially when so many services offer five-star ‘reviews’ to help market your book. So I’ve always been skeptical of a book with dozens of 5-star reviews, upon closer inspection, each of these reviews tells you absolutely nothing about what you’re looking at; it’s just ‘excellent’. “I won’t tell you why, but trust me, stranger.”
