A murder in wartime Switzerland reveals Switzerland’s complicity with Nazi Germany and World War II profiteering.
Billy and Kaz are sent to neutral Switzerland to investigate the murder of a Swiss bank official with ties to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). The governments of the United States and Switzerland are about to embark on diplomatic discussions regarding the Safehaven Protocols, aimed at limiting the amount of war materials Switzerland exports to Nazi Germany, preventing laundering, gold and prevent the Nazis from using their post-war wealth for personal gain war criminal. As the negotiations were about to begin, the OSS wanted their involvement in the murder to be unraveled, as well as to protect the participants from any threat of violence.
The plan went wrong from the start when Billy and Kaz landed in France. As they make their way through occupied territory to the border, they meet Anton Lasho, a member of the Sinti ethnic group, whose family was massacred by the Nazis, and in turn, a killing machine of Nazi Germany. They will need his help, because as they find out when they cross the border, Swiss banks are openly laundering the “harvested” gold from the concentration camps and those who are profiting. will do whatever it takes to protect their property and hide their shadow secret.
I’ve listened to The Devouring three times- I’m watching the series. This book is the hardest to read and the hardest to listen to. The Nazis exterminated millions of Jews – there is no excuse for what they did. The devouring shows that others were also targeted and that no one cared, in fact, there were individuals and industries that supported the killing. There is no such thing as neutrality.
Mr. Benn lost one star for his frequent use of obscene words. Such language adds nothing to the story. Would Mr. Benn appreciate it if people asked him to screw things up. Wouldn’t it hurt him to have people use his name as a curse.
