The Forge is a science fiction novel written by S. M. Stirling and David Drake. It is the first book in the General series, which is set in a future universe where humanity has colonized multiple star systems.

The story takes place in the 31st century, where an interstellar empire known as the Terran Republic rules over various human colonies. The protagonist of the novel is Raj Whitehall, a young officer in the Republic’s military. Raj is stationed on the planet Bellevue, which is known for its rich deposits of a valuable mineral called zuchai.

However, Raj’s peaceful life on Bellevue is disrupted when a rebellion breaks out among the local population. The rebels, led by a charismatic leader named Colonel Bartholomew Coleman, seek to overthrow the Terran Republic and establish their own independent state.

As the rebellion gains momentum, Raj finds himself caught up in the conflict. He becomes a key figure in the Republic’s efforts to suppress the rebellion and maintain control over Bellevue. With his military training and strategic acumen, Raj rises through the ranks and becomes a general, earning him the nickname “General Raj Whitehall.”

Throughout the novel, Raj faces numerous challenges and battles as he tries to quell the rebellion. He must navigate political intrigue, deal with treacherous allies and enemies, and make difficult decisions that will determine the fate of Bellevue and its people.

I first read this series when it first came out and had to wait for each book to come out . Fortunately the Book seller at the time was a military sci – fi enthusiast and sent me to the library to read the classics available . We are so fortunate to have these audiobooks available . Thank you Recorded Books . The long wait has been worth it . I find the joy of having these books of my youth read to me far exceeds the modest price .
