One startled reaction to reading this book would be to see it as yet another addition to the dying zombie genre – if that’s your reaction, you’re the one who lost it. reading this book. The book is surprisingly unique and refreshing – take a bit from a variety of sources and create an all-natural and mouthwatering dish.

The Last Plague should not be confused with simply a zombie novel. In fact, I’d say it’s not a zombie novel at all, but an incredibly creative monster story that borrows some aspects from zombie lore. The story follows a group of friends returning home from an extended weekend to find the country devastated by an unknown plague that has swept the countryside, turning the infected into cannibals. Terrible mutants who attack the living with undying hunger. The story becomes a desperate quest of the heroes to return home and hopefully find their family again.

What I think works best for stories of this kind is the near-instant immersion into the main plot of the film, if you’ll excuse the puns. Hawkins does this brilliantly, suggesting a number of pieces the reader can put together to form theories for what’s going on – but he never gets bored. Bored with over-presentation when everything is explained down to the smallest detail. I find that the scary thing often comes from not understanding what is happening or why. The reader is plunged into this crisis with the characters and you feel every turning point in their journey with them.

Be warned, this book is not for the faint of heart. But if you want a really good, gritty horror novel, be sure to put this one on your reading list.
