The Northern Reach / A Novel – Audiobook Online

The Northern Reach is a novel about the inhabitants of a small coastal town in Maine called Wellbridge. The story is told through interconnected chapters that introduce us to a wide range of characters, all of whom are affected in some way by the town’s past and present. Among them are a pair of siblings who have returned home to care for their ailing father, a retired teacher trying to cope with her husband’s decline into dementia, a young woman struggling to come to terms with her father’s suicide, and a high school student who witnesses an act of violence that will have far-reaching consequences. Despite their differences, the characters in The Northern Reach are bound together by a shared sense of place and history, and by the ways in which they must navigate loss and change in order to find connection and meaning in their lives.

The Northern Reach / A Novel, Audiobook Online By: W.S. Winslow

A heartbreaking debut novel about the power of place and family ties, the weight of the stories we choose to tell, and the burden of the things we hide.

Grief-stricken after losing her son at sea, Edith Baines gazed across the water at a sailboat at full sail but motionless in the winter winds and high tides of the Northern Reach. Edith seemed to be hallucinating. Or is it her? Edith’s wristwatch ushers in The Northern Reach, set in the seaside town of Wellbridge, Maine, where townsfolk make their living from the treacherous bay or make a living by the generosity of summer folk and whatever something they can gather together, salvage, or grab.

At the center of town life are the Baines family, the land – rich, cash – poor descendants of the town’s founders, along with the no – good – for – nothing Moody family, the Martins of Skunk Pond, and the site. Dirty camp, smuggling Edgecombs. Throughout the 20th century, families intersected, interacted, and married each other, grappling with secrets and prejudices that spanned generations, opening new wounds, and calculating with shadows. old ghost.

The Northern Reach by W. S. Winslow is a spectacular debut into the complexities of families, the cultural heritage of places, people and experiences that shape us.

“What could be better than walking through a small and unfamiliar town and peering through the window into the life of the houses there? Northern Reach offers you that rich and satisfying treat. This is a Maine as diverse and harsh as the pull of the tide in the heart of every human being.” (Sarah Blake, guestbook author)

Mark Bramhall nailed the “Downeast” Maine accent. As a 63 – year – old from Maine, I have known many people like the characters in Winslow’s book. However, not everyone in Maine lives off of Saturday night’s lucky dinners at the local grange hall. It’s funny and sad to read, but very well done.

The Northern Reach is W.S. Winslow’s debut novel, but it’s certainly not a beginner’s endeavor. This is an ambitious collection of interconnected stories (somewhat similar in structure to Jennifer Egan’s Visit from the Goon Squad) told from multiple perspectives across generations. Winslow skillfully handled this extended family of dysfunctional souls who endured love, loss, grief, despair, tragedy, adultery, disappointment, and resentment. There are many characters, but each part has a family tree showing who is who. The writing is sometimes stunning, the tone melancholy, as Winslow recounts the resilience and determination of many of her characters. Maine is almost a character, its cold, rugged beauty pushing people into the close quarters of the village of Wellbridge, ensuring friction ensues as people rub against each other.
