David Hewson has written a series of books set in Italy. This book, A Season for the Dead, is the beginning of the series. The author describes Detective Nic Costa as his main character but after reading the series it seems that there are several main characters developed in each book. The other main characters, Leo, a Chief Inspector, Lucca killed prematurely, and Gionni, Teresa, a female pathologist, and Emily, a former FBI agent turned architect are both interesting and evolving as Nick Costa.
The author does a good job of researching the context of the stories and placing them in familiar landmarks of Rome. Although there is sometimes cultural confusion with a British author writing about the Italian police in Rome and being read by an American, these stories often work. This is no exception. The perpetrator is always one step ahead of the police and has almost no time to commit the most heinous and vile crimes. The crimes in Season all revolve around the secret and unhealthy life of an American Cardinal in the Vatican. But, if you’re reading this genre, you’re used to gruesome deaths and bizarre episodes. And David Hewson does all of this very well.
