Invisible Prey is the 17th mystery novel in the Lucas Davenport series by author John Sandford.
In an affluent Minneapolis neighborhood, two elderly women were beaten to death with batons. They were the victims of a random robbery, although nothing of value appears to have been stolen. When Lucas Davenport looked deeper, he feared that the victims weren’t so random and the stolen items weren’t priceless. A pattern emerges, which leads Lucas to…certainly not where he expected. That sucks, because the killers are waiting for him. And that was just the first surprise
An interesting story with a complex plot. Lucas Davenport is called in to assist in a case when an elderly woman and her maid are beaten to death in the woman’s home. It was a strange case because a bunch of items were missing. It is not suitable for MOs of any particular type of crime. Complications arose as others were killed and the investigation expanded.
Davenport is processing another instance in parallel. A prominent state senator was charged with statutory rape for having an affair with a teenage girl. The action is the novel that seems to drift back and forth between the two cases.
Perhaps the author made the story a bit complicated when two parallel plots were drawn together, and countless crimes occurred, from murder and theft to fraud and money laundering. There is even cruelty to animals.
