Growing up in rural Montana, a state that has more in common with the Ozarks than with any of its neighboring states to the north, I can vouch for Noblin’s very realistic description of town life How small would it be? I appreciate the author’s willingness to tackle difficult topics like poverty, gender identity, mental illness, alcoholism, and domestic violence in a way that avoids preaching. Instead of delving into their common “why” in rural areas, she mentions the “how”: How can we help? How can we reduce pain? How can we prevent it?
