My Sister, the Serial Killer A Novel – Free Full Audiobook
My Sister, the Serial Killer is a literary fiction book by author Oyinkan Braithwaite.
A short, darkly humorous hand grenade about a Nigerian woman whose sister has the very inconvenient habit of killing her boyfriend.
Korede is bitter. How could she not be? Her younger sister, Ayoola, is many things: popular child, beautiful, maybe sociopath. Ayoola’s third boyfriend in a row has died.
Korede’s practicality is her saving grace. She knows the best solutions to clean up the blood, her car trunk is big enough to hold a body and she stops Ayoola from posting pictures of her dinner on Instagram when she should be mourning her boyfriend.” his disappearance”.
Korede has long had a crush on a handsome, kind doctor at the hospital where she works. She dreamed of the day he would realize that she was the one he needed. When he asks Korede for Ayoola’s phone number, she has to think about what kind of person her sister has become and how far she is willing to go to protect her.
Oyinkan Braithwaite’s deadly delicious debut is both exciting and terrifying.
This is a master class on tension, create it, relax it a little, then stretch again. It has the potential to be classified as a crime, but I feel that structurally, it is heavily horror-packed. I had to read it in pieces, which was unusual for me, but I did encounter “I can’t watch” statements. Moments where I had to take a break and regain emotional balance before going back to the characters.
There is a freshness to the piece. Nothing is clear about the plot. The characters are well done and treated with respect. The Sisterly relationship was perfect. There are some interesting selections of length programs that I think work well and style well with the economical and power-saving nature of a Noir. It’s what I call genre+ when a writer takes genre constructs and uses them as a springboard to something a little more advanced.
I love Korede and love the way she got sucked into the moral quagmire by Braithwaite. All extrinsic and intrinsic motives lead to a standard conclusion. Where I have my only criticism note, I think the epilogue could have been written a bit longer. I like it, I just think it needs to be expanded a bit more.
