Next to Last Stand/ Walt Longmire Mysteries, Book 16 – Audiobook Online

Next to Last Stand is a literary fiction book in the Walt Longmire Mysteries series by author Craig Johnson.
One of the most viewed paintings in US history. Custer’s Last War, copied and distributed by Anheuser-Busch at a rate of more than two million copies per year, was destroyed in a fire at 7th Cavalry Headquarters in Fort Bliss, Texas, in 1946. Or is it?

Charley Lee Stillwater died of an apparent heart attack at the Wyoming Home for Soldiers & Sailors, Walt Longmire was called in to try to figure out the meaning of a painting and a Florsheim shoebox containing a million dollars , send the kind sheriff on the trail of a dangerous art heist.

One of Longmire’s friends died at the VA hospital. In his room, Longmire found what he believes to be an original work of Western art and $1 million in a shoebox. He carries artwork around with him trying to figure out the history of the piece and how his friend owned it. He’s also trying to figure out who gets the million or else it goes to the government.

Craig Johnson did a great job of incorporating the story of Custer and Little Big Horn into this current story. He details the realities of the past and contrasts it with the fallacies in stories told to this day.

Meanwhile, the story of the artwork is purely entertaining.

George Guidall is an extraordinary storyteller and once again I feel truly blessed to hear from him. Every time he narrates a book, I’m grateful that he hasn’t chosen to retire yet! Guidall is 82 years old.
