Nixonland recreates America’s turbulent 1960s and early 1970s, and reveals how Richard Nixon rose from the political grave to hold and hold the presidency.

The author takes us right into the cultural and political world of the late sixties and early seventies. He shows how Nixon understood the fascination of a large section of Americans’ lives and began to exploit them to build a winning coalition. It’s usually ugly. Much of the intoxication he deliberately exploits is that of white southerners who are intoxicated with civil rights laws and feel despised by Washington. But it’s not just Southerners. He exploits similar resentments in the north. He can bring white workers into the ranks of the Republican Party.

This was also the time when the South began voting for the Republican party. It was also the coalition that Reagan took power in. What the book is also doing, although this may not be its goal, is just why Donald Trump was able to build a similar coalition. And, as was the case with Nixon, left-wing libertarians couldn’t understand why anyone could vote for him. The libertarians of Nixon’s day simply assumed that all workers would be on their side. It’s just the natural way of things for them. And so they were troubled by the fact that this was increasingly wrong.
