The award-winning author of The Miseducation of Cameron Post makes his adult debut with this unique and imaginative horror comedy centered around a cursed New England boarding school for girls – a homage to the sinister singularity of storytelling, sapphic love, and rebellious women’s spirit.
Our story begins in 1902, at Brookhants Girls’ School. Flo and Clara, two impressionable students, are obsessed with each other and with a daring young writer named Mary MacLane, the author of a scandalous best-selling memoir. To show their devotion to Mary, the girls formed their own club and called it the Evil Heroine Association. They secretly meet in a nearby apple orchard, the setting of their wildest happiness and eventual grisly death.
This is where their bodies were later discovered with a copy of Mary’s book laid beside them, victims of a bunch of angry, stinging yellow coats. Less than five years later, Brookhants Girls’ School closed forever – but not long after, three more people mysteriously died on campus, each in a very disturbing way.
More than a century later, now-abandoned and dilapidated Brookhants is back in the headlines when eerie writer Merritt Emmons publishes a groundbreaking book celebrating the eerie, feminist history surrounding the institution of the Ages. Gold plating is “haunted and cursed”. Her best-selling book inspired a controversial horror film adaptation starring famous actor and lesbian Harper Harper as the ill-fated heroine Flo, for opposite B-list actress and former child star Audrey Wells as Clara. But when Brookhants opens the doors again, and our three modern heroines arrive on set to begin filming, the past and present become grimly tangled – or perhaps just exploited. roughly – and soon it’s impossible to tell where the curse begins and where Hollywood begins.
A story within a story within a story, Plain Bad Heroines is a haunting masterpiece of modern hyper – fiction that combines Sarah Waters’ ghostly sensibility with Marisha Pessl’s dark imagination and Curtis Sittenfeld’s edgy humor and poignant social commentary into a hearty, hilarious, mesmerizing, and wonderful laugh.
Reader/audience narration is especially effective for audio recordings. The basic structure of the vaguely parallel plot lines about the lives of young women past and present is well done. The mysterious ending could have been better. But it is an interesting listen.
I will think about this book for days, maybe months. If you like ghosts, women and complicated storylines then you’ll love it. Don’t worry about complications because Car Sands will hold your hand and won’t let go. A show!
I want to say more, dear readers, but I need to run and buy a paper copy of this book. And being able to listen to audiobooks again…
