Salt Slow – Audiobook Online By: Julia Armfield
One of Esquire Magazine’s Best Books of 2019.
“Artistic and poignant, Armfield’s debut work explores the vicissitudes of man’s connection to a life influenced by the strange.” (Kirkus’s comment)
From White Review Short Story Award Winner Julia Armfield comes an outstanding, provocative debut collection of stories for fans of Carmen Maria Machado and Kelly Link.
In her fascinating debut, Julia Armfield explores the experiences of women in contemporary society, mapped through their bodies. When the sleep of the urban dwellers became detached from them, like the shadow of Peter Pan, the city became sleepless. A teenager entering puberty notices his body transforming in very different ways than his classmates.
When a popular band is gaining momentum, the fangirls after their tour turn into something monstrous. After their parents remarry, two step-sisters, a girl and a wolf, develop a dangerously close relationship. And in the apocalyptic setting, a pregnant woman begins to realize that the creature in her belly is not what she expected.
Blending elements of horror, sci-fi, mythology, and feminism, Slow Salt is a completely original anthology of short stories sure to dazzle and shock, heralding the arrival of a bold new voice.
Praise slow salt:
“Introspective, intense and unsettlingly beautiful, Armfield’s writing has incredible power. This collection has haunted me with its brilliance.” (Elizabeth Macneal, author of The Doll Factory) . “Armfield is a huge, exhausted talent.” (Daisy Johnson, Everything Under’s Booker Prize shortlisted author)
I love these short stories. Perfect for a winter night. Very difficult to put down. I love the characters even for a short time, they feel completely connected and understandable. The City That Doesn’t Sleep Feels A Pandemic Could Be Concerned. The woman did not leave the house. There are many images and myths in today’s mundane context. I look forward to revisiting it next winter. Much better than Daisy Jones’ similar offer.
Salt Slow is a great collection of short stories that won’t leave you. Julia Armfield is an amazingly skilled wordsmith, her visuals just can’t keep up – the description of the lobsters at the beginning of the story title, “Swiss, puffs out, claws outstretched , like a tulip” is a good example. Rich in imagination, I had a similar reaction to Ian McEwan’s short stories. This deserves to be the start of a similarly glittering career. Lesley Wilson
