Survival – Species Imperative, Book 1, Species Imperative Series, Book 1, Audiobook Online By: Julie E. Czerneda

A biologist herself, Julie E. Czerneda has earned a reputation in science fiction circles for her ability to create beautifully crafted, imaginative yet recognizable alien races reliable.

In Survival, the first novel in her new series, Species Imperative, she uses this talent to build races, characters, and universes that will draw listeners into a wonderfully sonic narrative. interstellar conspiracy, when an Earth scientist is caught up in a horrifying case. conflict between species. Norcoast Salmon Research Facility Senior Co-Manager, Dr Mackenzie Connor, Mac to her friends and colleagues, is a trained biologist whose work has certainly become life-changing. her life. And working at Base Norcoast, ideally located right where the Tannu River flows westward of the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Coast was the perfect situation for Mac. She and her scientist colleague Dr Emily Mamani had just settled in to monitor schools of salmon this year when their research was interrupted by the unprecedented appearance of Brymn, the first member of the strain. An alien race called the Ohryn once set foot on Earth.

Brymn is an archaeologist, and much of his research focuses on a region of space called the Chasm, a part of the universe that is literally dead, all of its worlds devoid of any any form of life, although traces of already existing civilizations remain. must have flourished in the region. Brymn sought out Mac because she was a biologist – a discipline strictly forbidden for his people – and he felt that through her expertise she could help him. discover what created the Abyss. But Mac has little interest in alien races and studies beyond Earth, and as politely as possible, she tries to make it clear that she doesn’t want to give up her job.

However, the decision soon slips out of her hands when a mysterious and devastating attack on the Base leads to Emily’s abduction, and at the same time forces Mac to flee for her life along with Brymn and Brymn. Earth agents are escorting him. Suddenly, it seems that Earth may be under attack by the legendary race Ohryn calls the Ro, creatures they think may be the destructive force behind Chasm. Cut off from everything and everyone she knows, Mac finds herself in grave danger and is tasked with learning everything she can to assist Earth in protecting humanity from extinction….

I read this series over 10 years ago, still a great story. Note: I am hearing impaired and have difficulty with female readers. It took some time to get used to her voice, totally worth it. I love her voice for Mac, Emily and Brym. All male voices, not so much. I really enjoyed the humour.

This is one of Czerneda’s best novels. While I also love Beholder’s Eye and A Thousand Words for Stranger, I love the way she uses the command of the species to create cohesion for the new series. I eagerly await the next works of Czerneda. She has the imagination and the ability to let her characters succeed in telling their own stories.
