The Fortune Of War By Patrick O’Brian – Audiobook Online

The Fortune of War by Patrick O’Brian tells the story of the H.M.S. Leopard and its crew, who have had a difficult and plagued journey. They find themselves in Pulo Batang, looking more like a merchant ship than a warship. Their journey has been filled with hardships, including contracting gaol-fever, being pursued by the Dutch Waakzaamheid, and being struck by an iceberg. Captain Jack Aubrey and his crew are ready to return home after their tumultuous journey.

H.M.S. Leopard pulled into Pulo Batang Bay looking more like a dingy merchant ship than a warrior. The crew endured a disastrous voyage due to gaol fever, being chased by the Dutch ship Waakzaamheid and hit by an iceberg. Suffice it to say, Jack Aubrey is ready to go home.

The return journey aboard La Fleche proves to be exciting for both Aubrey and his special friend. Stephen Maturin, with high winds and beautiful skies. That’s when La Fleche approached the Brazilian coast, tragedy struck. The fire suddenly devastated the ship, forcing the crew to use lifeboats. Finally rescued by Java, Aubrey and Maturin encounter another obstacle impeding their journey home as Java engages the U.S.S. Constitution in battle, and lose. Aubrey, now a prisoner of war in Boston, awaits news of a prisoner exchange, while Maturin renews his friendship with the dark-haired foreigner, Diana Villiers.

This is a great read. It was a lot of fun. The real “plus” on top of the excitement goes to those who are interested in the history of naval warfare and also of early British/American relations.
