The Gate To Women’s Country – Audiobook Online

The Gate to Women’s Country is a science fiction novel by Sheri S. Tepper that takes place in a dystopian future where society is divided into two parts: Women’s Country and the warrior city of Marthas. Women’s Country is a peaceful, matriarchal society that values education, arts, and women’s knowledge, while Marthas is ruled by men who control the military and are obsessed with war. The story follows Stavia, a woman living in Women’s Country, who is torn between her own desires and the expectations of her community. She struggles to reconcile her love for her childhood friend, Rennie, with the pressures placed upon her as a woman of Women’s Country. At the same time, the city of Marthas is planning an attack on Women’s Country, and Stavia finds herself caught up in the conflict. As the war between the two societies intensifies, Stavia learns the truth about the history of her world and the terrible secrets that have been kept hidden from her. She must decide whether to stay loyal to Women’s Country or to risk everything to fight for the truth. The Gate to Women’s Country is a thought-provoking and engaging novel that explores themes of gender, power, and social justice. It has been praised for its vivid world-building, complex characters, and feminist perspective. The novel offers a critique of patriarchal societies while also providing hope for a better future.

Women rule in the Nation of Women. Women live separately from men, sheltering what remains of civilization. They prevented themselves by walls and by decree from pillaging the men.

Waging war is all people good for. The men were allowed to fight each other in their barbaric battles, garrison against garrison. For his pride, each boy ritually rejected his mother when he came of age to become a warrior. But all the secrets of civilization are entirely in the possession of women.

Naturally, there are men who want to know what women know. And when Stavia meets Chernon, the war between the sexes begins again. Stupidly, she provided books for Chernon to read. Before long, Chernon was hatching a plan to get revenge on women.

One of the quintessential feminist SF novels, Sheri Tepper once again creates a world where numerous issues and compelling characters are carefully crafted into a compelling story that draws you in and draws you along. A must-read book.

I have loved this book since I first read it many years ago. It’s a bit dark, as expected, providing a post-apocalyptic setting, but not too graphic. In the novel, many generations have passed since the time of the “convulsion” and the story is about a society that has rebuilt itself to new standards. The story stands the test of time, and is ultimately both a warning and a fantasy about how things might play out in an alternate reality.
