The House We Grew Up In
- Narrated by: Karina Fernandez
Meet the picture-perfect Bird family: pragmatic Meg, dreamy Beth, and twins Rory and Rhys, one disruptive adventurer, the other a softer, more sensitive partner. Their father is a sweet, gallant man, but Lorelei, the beautiful, free-spirited mother, is at the center. During those early years, Lorelei tried to freeze time by filling their simple brick house with precious mementos. Easter egg leaves are her favorite. Manual supplies, too. She hung up all the children’s artwork to her husband’s chagrin.
Then, one Easter weekend, a tragedy so devastating that, almost imperceptibly, it began to tear the family apart. Years passed and the kids became adults, while Lorelei became the county’s worst hoarder. She shunned her husband and children and lived as a recluse. But then something happened that beckons the Birds to return to the home they grew up in – to finally understand the events of Easter long ago and uncover many secrets. Secrets hidden in the nooks and crannies of the house.
I really, really like this one. Lately, I’ve been listening to a lot of Lisa Jewell’s books, and although I like them all, I find them either a bit good or a bad thing when it comes to being great. I think this is great. It hooked me up quickly and I was hooked the whole time.
