The Indigo Girl – Audiobook Online

“The Indigo Girl” is a historical novel by Natasha Boyd. The novel tells the story of Eliza Lucas Pinckney, a young woman living in colonial South Carolina in the early 18th century.

Eliza is a headstrong and independent young woman who is determined to prove herself in a world dominated by men. When her father is called away to attend to his military duties, Eliza is left in charge of the family’s plantations. Taking on this responsibility, Eliza sets out to cultivate a lucrative crop of indigo, despite the difficulties and prejudices she faces. Along the way, Eliza develops close relationships with the slaves who work on her plantations, and begins to question the morality of the slave system.

As she struggles to make her way in a world that is hostile to her ambitions, Eliza is forced to confront the injustices of the society she lives in, and to fight for the values and traditions that she holds dear. Narrated by Saskia Maarleveld, the novel brings to life the sights, sounds, and struggles of colonial South Carolina in vivid detail.

In this incredible story of ambition, betrayal, and sacrifice, an extraordinary sixteen-year-old girl from Colonial South Carolina defies all expectations to achieve her dreams.

1739. Eliza Lucas was sixteen years old when her father put her in charge of their family’s three plantations in rural South Carolina and then went on to dry up the estates to pursue her military ambitions. Tensions with the British and with the Spaniards in Florida, just a short distance from the coast, were growing and the slaves began to grow restless. Her mother wanted nothing more than for their attempt in South Carolina to fail so they could move back to England. Soon her family was in danger of losing everything.

When she heard how much the French paid for indigo dye, Eliza believed that was the key to their salvation. But everyone told her it was impossible, and no one shared the secret to doing it. Baffled at every turn, even by her own family, Eliza finds that her only allies are an elderly gardener, an elderly and married gentleman lawyer, and a slave with whom she made a dangerous deal: teach her the thousand-year-old intricacies of the secret process for making indigo dye, and in return—contrary to the laws of the day—she would teach slaves could read.

So begins an incredible story of love, dangerous and hidden friendships, ambition, betrayal and sacrifice.

Based on historical documents, including Eliza’s letters, this is a historical fiction about how a teenage girl produced indigo dye, which became one of the exports. South Carolina’s largest, an export that laid the groundwork for the incredible wealth of a number of Southern families who are still alive today. Although largely ignored by historians, Eliza Lucas’ achievements influenced the course of American history. When she died in 1793, President George Washington was the coffin bearer at her funeral.

This book is set between 1739 and 1744, with romance, intrigue, forbidden friendships, and political and financial threats coming together to make up the story of one woman. Extraordinary children whose actions were ahead of their time: the story of the girl in the indigo shirt.

This book is truly amazing! I live in the area it’s based on, and this book has intrigued me a lot more about the early history of the area. The author brought the characters to life in a beautiful way!! I feel like I’ve stepped back in time. Her descriptions of the landscape and plantation life are delightful. I would love to see this book made into a major motion picture!!!
