Tom Wolfe has earned my admiration with this book and The Painted Word and I’ve enjoyed all of his books since then. I met him once when he talked at a collection of creative directors that advertise and find him knowledgeable, satirical and entertaining like his books.

This is a collection of short stories about contemporary New York and America written in the early 1960s. As you might expect, Wolfe is a bit rougher in the corners here, and so there’s a bit of a bump. and omitted. Still, America’s Last Hero, about racer Junior Johnson and NASCAR’s early beginnings, is breathtaking – these are Wolfe’s true ideas about American masculinity that blossomed in The Right Stuff.
