Gil Cunningham’s third murder mystery is set in medieval Glasgow. The crate was supposed to contain books – instead it contained treasure and a severed head…

Gil Cunningham and his old acquaintance, Glasgow merchant Augie Morison, expect a book delivery from the Books. low country, reported the grisly substitute to the Mayor, and at the inquest the next morning Morison was charged with murder and jailed.

He calls on Gil, who sets out with his friend and future father – in – law Maistre Pierre, a French master builder, to find the owner of the treasure, trace the crate and identify it dead man’s identity. The path they followed led them from James IV’s court at Stirling through a rancher’s yard at Linlithgow, to another death on the bare slopes of the Pentland Hills.

Really starting to love this series. Don’t wish someone would spell check an e-book. If I can detect typos and corrections, there are quite a few of them. Very good on historical basis and I like the dog (it’s not a “girl” nor a dumb dog. What it does is what a dog can and can do) . The characters are reasonably developed and one can recognize them. As such, the women are presented as full characters, not just “backgrounds” for the story.

I love this series by Pat McIntosh. The usual medieval thriller but these take place in Glasgow and surrounding areas (varying). The protagonist’s journey from a potential priest to a married lawyer (slightly different). Upset is falling into the Scottish language. but after 4 books, I’ve come to grips with this and think this adds to the fact that these stories take place in Glasgow. I’d recommend starting with the first story in the series because there’s nothing to indicate the order in which the books are included – google and you can see the order in which they were written. Not an Ellis Peters patch but I will continue to read them as I am hooked and want to know what happens in Gil’s development.
