The Nicholas Feast – Audiobook Online

“The Nicholas Feast” is a historical mystery novel by Pat McIntosh, and it tells the story of Gil Cunningham, a sleuth in medieval Scotland. In this book, Cunningham is called to investigate the disappearance of a local merchant, who was last seen leaving a tavern after celebrating the Feast of Saint Nicholas. The merchant’s wife is distraught and fears that her husband has been murdered by a rival, but Cunningham suspects that there might be more to the case than meets the eye. He sets out to unravel a complex web of motives and secrets that involve not only the missing merchant but also his friends, employees, and business partners. As Cunningham delves deeper into the case, he discovers a dangerous plot that could cost him his life. This book offers a compelling blend of historical fiction and mystery and provides an insightful glimpse into medieval Scotland’s customs, traditions, and political intrigue.

Glasgow, 1492: Gil Cunningham later observes that if he had known in advance that a corpse would be found in the university coal shed, he would never have attended the Faculty of Arts party. In this mysterious adventure, Gil Cunningham returns to his old university for the Nicholas Feast, where he and his colleagues are entertained by a play presented by several students. One of the actors, William Irvine, is later found murdered and Gil, with Alys’ assistance, begins to untangle a complex web of espionage and blackmail involving tutors and classmates. by William. Matters are further complicated by the arrival of Gil’s formidable mother, who is determined to investigate his fiancée. Little did Alys and Gil realize that it was she who would provide the final key to unmasking the killer and clarifying his motives.

As a lover of mysteries and a historian, I enjoy exploring books like the Gil Cunningham murder series. Nicholas Festival is the second book in the series that I’ve read (I’m reading the third now) and find it clever and entertaining. McIntosh has vividly recreated a very different world, one in which who your family is and who they’re loyal to is so important. She also gives us a hands-on look at the church and how important it was to people’s lives in Scotland in the late 15th century.

In this book, Gil Cunningham, formerly destined for the church but now engaged to Alys Mason, investigates the murder of a young and often unpopular student at Gil’s alma mater. Suspects range from schoolmates to a nobleman and relative of the murdered boy, as well as a priest. Gil, along with his fiancé and future father-in-law Pierre, arranges clues, motives, and complex family relationships to ultimately unmask the killer. In this book, we also get to meet Gil’s mother and get more details about family life during this period. Well, as another reviewer noted, there are quite a few unfamiliar words in the book. Some are included in the Kindle dictionary, some are not. For many of them, the author uses common terminology in the following one or two sentences, which helps us understand. Others can be figured out from the context. To me, the 15th century Scots language is fascinating and is added to, not diminished, by reading this book. If you like historical mysteries, check out this series.
