Our main character, Walter Mortinson, who lives in the town of Moorsmouth, is the living embodiment of the word “boring”. For one, the smog literally obscured the view of its inhabitants. Walter’s only joy comes from his invention, but unfortunately for him, his mother opposes his passion, calling it “dangerous” and pressuring him to continue the family business and become an executioner. Cordelia, his next door neighbor, is a moody girl with ulterior reasons for wanting to run away from home. Together, they flee in Walter’s family hearse to Faster Isle, where famed inventor Horace Fasterborn invites Walter to be his apprentice. As we read, we (and the characters) get a glimpse of Walter’s mysterious past and he’s finally pushed into his future.

This book is NOT what I expected, it is more than that. Child/adult friendly, imaginative, and the kind of book I wish I had read as a child to prepare me for loss, adventure, and remove my fear of uniqueness.

This book surprised me – it was a crazy game that followed several kids on an adventure – until it became something much more profound and poignant. It climbs on you, but when it catches you, it’s overwhelmed in its emotional complexity. Just extraordinary work.
