The Removers By Donald Hamilton – Audiobook Online

The Removers is the third book in the Matt Helm series written by Donald Hamilton. Published in 1961, it continues the thrilling adventures of the protagonist, Matt Helm, a former government assassin turned private investigator. The series is known for its action-packed plots, espionage themes, and Helm’s gritty and realistic portrayal as a spy.

In The Removers, Matt Helm is reluctantly pulled back into the world of espionage after his wife, Beth, is killed in a car accident. Helm discovers that her death was not an accident but a deliberate act orchestrated by an unknown enemy. Fueled by grief and a thirst for revenge, he embarks on a mission to uncover the truth behind his wife’s murder and bring those responsible to justice.

As Helm delves deeper into the investigation, he uncovers a complex web of deceit and betrayal. He learns that Beth was not the only victim targeted by this mysterious organization. They have been systematically eliminating individuals who possess valuable information or pose a threat to their operations. Helm realizes that he must stop this organization before they can strike again.

Throughout the novel, Helm encounters various adversaries and allies, each with their own hidden agendas. He navigates through dangerous situations, relying on his skills as a trained assassin and his ability to outwit his opponents. Along the way, he forms alliances with other intelligence operatives who share his goal of dismantling the organization responsible for Beth’s death.

Donald Hamilton’s writing style in The Removers is fast-paced and suspenseful, keeping readers engaged from start to finish. The book combines elements of espionage, action, and mystery, creating a compelling narrative that showcases Helm’s determination and resourcefulness.

One of the notable aspects of the Matt Helm series is its realistic portrayal of espionage. Unlike many other spy novels of its time, Hamilton’s books depict the gritty reality of intelligence work, highlighting the moral ambiguity and personal sacrifices involved in such a profession. Helm is not portrayed as a glamorous and invincible hero but as a flawed and complex character who must confront the consequences of his actions.

The Removers is a thrilling addition to the Matt Helm series, offering readers an exciting blend of espionage, action, and suspense. It explores themes of revenge, loyalty, and the price of justice. Donald Hamilton’s masterful storytelling and attention to detail make this book a must-read for fans of the spy genre.

The third installment in the legendary horror series by Matt Helm

A year after being reactivated as a spy, Matt Helm received a text from his ex-wife asking him for help. The threat is an enemy agent named Martel, disguised as a mob assassin. To protect his family, Helm must eliminate the threat before his own children pay a heavy price.

Originally released in the era of James Bond novels, Matt Helm’s novels are considered better and more realistic than Bond, garnering critical acclaim from critics and die-hard fans alike.

I found the first two titles in the Matt Helm series disappointing. This, the third installment in the series, is more engaging. Maybe the author finally hit his stride here. There are some other howling and silly storylines that you have to ignore. For example, the hero has the ability to go many days without sleep. Concussion and heavy drinking did not impair his mental clarity or physical reflexes. On the other hand, the plot left me restlessly eager to know what would happen next. And that’s the main reason to read suspense novels, so this book provides the essentials.

These books by Matt Helm are surprisingly good, as they are the perfect little cold war capsules. I remember when they were new, and I still love them after all these years. And I think from now on I’ll hear them in Stefan Rudnicki’s voice, even if I read them on paper.

I’m enjoying stories that seem brought into the present day by having them read new technology.
Thanks for thinking about it! This is a great series to get hooked on, if you don’t mind how short the book is. (They’re free as part of the Plus Catalog). Excellent storyteller. For me, perfect. Every moment, every character, every line is interesting and amuses me. I’m so glad, – there are so many other Donald Hamilton books to listen to!!!
