The Smell of Other People’s Houses – Audiobook Online

The Smell of Other People’s Houses is a novel by Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock that explores the lives of four teenagers in Alaska in the 1970s. Each character’s story unfolds in a unique way, but they are all connected through their shared experiences of family, friendship, and the limitations of their surroundings. Ruth is a fiercely independent girl who has learned to take care of herself and her younger siblings after her mother abandoned them. Dora is struggling to come to terms with her unexpected pregnancy and the decision about what to do next. Alyce dreams of becoming a figure skater, but feels trapped by her small town and the expectations of her family. Finally, there’s Hank, whose life is filled with tragedy and uncertainty as he navigates the complexities of his dysfunctional family.

The book is told from the perspective of each of these characters, allowing the reader to gain insight into their innermost thoughts and feelings. Hitchcock’s lyrical prose draws readers into the harsh and often beautiful landscape of Alaska, as well as the emotional terrain of each character’s life. The title of the novel references the way in which our sense of smell is often intimately connected to memory and emotion. Hitchcock skillfully weaves in descriptions of scents that evoke specific moments or emotions in the characters’ lives, such as the smell of snow falling or the aroma of fresh baked bread. The Smell of Other People’s Houses is ultimately a story about the profound impact that family, friends, and community can have on our lives, for better or for worse. It is a poignant and beautifully crafted debut novel that will resonate with readers of all ages.

In Alaska, 1970, being a teenager here isn’t like being a teenager anywhere else. This heartfelt and poignant debut is for fans of Rainbow Rowell, Louise Erdrich, Sherman Alexie and Benjamin Alire Saenz. The intertwined stories of love, tragedy, wild luck, and salvation at the edge of America’s Last Frontier introduce a writer of rare talent.

Ruth has a secret that she can’t keep forever. Dora wonders if she can really escape where she came from, even if luck strikes. Alyce is trying to reconcile her desire to dance with the life she has always known aboard her family’s fishing boat. Hank and his brothers decide it’s safer to flee than to stay home – until one of them is in terrible danger. Four very different lives are about to become entangled.

I love all the characters in the book and how it feels to live in a small town, the story is really good and the way it all ties together, a great read will read will look forward to the next book follow her.

I love this story. I love how each character has their own story and how they fit together perfectly. I’m Alaskan so I can relate to the lifestyle and the setting. Excellent.
