Barcelona, 1945: Immediately after the war, a great city of the world lies in darkness, nursing its wounds, and a boy named Daniel wakes up on his 11th birthday and I realized that I no longer remember my mother’s face.
To comfort his only child, Daniel’s widowed father, an antique book dealer, tells him the secret of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, a library cared for by the society. The rare book dealers in Barcelona act as a repository of books forgotten by the world, waiting for someone to take an interest in them again.
Daniel’s father coaxes him to choose a book from the spiraling maze of shelves, which it is said will have special meaning to him. And Daniel loved the novel of his choice, Julian Carax’s The Shadow of the Wind, so much that he set out to find the rest of Carax’s work. To his amazement, he discovers that someone has systematically destroyed every copy of every book this author has written. In fact, he may have the last one to exist. Before Daniel knew it, his seemingly innocuous quest opened the door to one of Barcelona’s darkest secrets, an epic tale of murder, magic, madness and unhappy love.
A strangely gripping historical mystery, a heart – wrenching romance and a moving homage to the mystical power of books, The Shadow of the Wind is a triumph in the art of storyteller.
Sometimes, if a dedicated reader is lucky, they find a book so great that the effect is overwhelming. This is one of those rare finds. Other listeners have commented on the skill of the author and the talent of the narrator but I think it is also important to honor the talented translator who has done an outstanding job maintaining the integrity and poetry of the author. original works. I heartily recommend this book to all lovers of great literature.
What’s really great about this book is that you don’t really need to read it. It’s immediately interesting. You instantly fall in love with the characters and get sucked into the mystery. I find myself staying up too late and saying, “Okay, I’ll read until I know what happened to him” or “Wow, I can’t leave it THAT overnight!” This book is remarkable. The characters are so wonderfully human and imperfect that you find yourself related to a lot of them. I felt while reading this book that the story was important. I wish it was in the syllabus of high school literature classes because you learn about the human experience in wartime, as well as the importance of accepting and finding kindness in human nature while truly Excited to see where the story will lead.
