Ken Follett is one of those contemporary authors that both intrigues and irks me. I’ve read Follett’s brilliant novels (i.e. Eye of the Needle) and hopeless messes (i.e. Jackdaws). To me, Dangerous Fortune is one side of the bright. Follett pulls off an outrageous and predictable plot in which a group of schoolmates engage in a crime that comes back to haunt them years later. Dangerous fortunes begin like that. What brings Follett’s characters into the realm of art is the artistry of the author. He shapes and presents each character so decisively that the reader is never lost. These characters have style, wit, and purpose, and Follett throws them at us with a brave zest. Aided by a superb storyteller, Michael Page, Ken Follett’s emotions are evident on every page. I loved this book and am so sorry it ended.
