A Long Petal of the Sea – Audiobook Online – A Novel
A Long Petal of the Sea – Audiobook Online – A Novel by Author Isabel Allende, Nick Caistor, Amanda Hopkinson.
There are two things I like about Isabel Allende’s books. One she is a talented writer and her prose is beautiful. The second is that she places her characters in a real historical/political situation.
In this book there are some key issues that are similar to today’s world. The rise of fascism and the large number of refugees. The story begins with the Spanish Civil War and follows our protagonists who are the last refugees accepted into Chile with the help of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. Allende addresses a number of social issues such as the rights or deprivations of women and the Catholic church’s treatment of unborn mothers. I must admit that I never realized the number of Spanish refugees who fled to France at the end of the Civil War. I was amazed by the number of similarities between then and now. The book caught my attention from the beginning and kept it transparent. I highly recommend reading this book.
The book is nine hours and forty-six minutes. Edoardo Ballerini does an excellent job of narrating the book. Ballerini is an actor and has won numerous Headphone Awards as well as an Audie Award. He won the 2019 Best Male Narrator Award and also Audiofile Magazine’s Golden Vocal Award 2019.
