When she was 12 years old, the Nazis occupied Paris and the father and son fled to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive uncle lived in a tall house by the sea. With them, they carry what may be the museum’s most precious and dangerous jewel.
In a mining town in Germany, orphaned boy Werner grew up with his sister, fascinated by a rudimentary radio they found. Werner became an expert in the construction and repair of these important new instruments. A talent that won him a place in the brutal academy for the Hitler Youth. Then assigned special mission to monitor the resistance. Increasingly aware of the human cost to his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and eventually to Saint-Malo, where his and Marie-Laure’s story converges.
