Obviously, his female character is the absolute worst, but I don’t think his male voice is that great either (as evidenced by Gavin’s introduction in Chapter 2, when the narrator’s voice sounds sullen. charming and somewhat unintelligibly unintelligible). I would summarize his reading style as ‘satire melodrama’. Honestly, I wonder if he’d read a more serious (non-romantic) novel, and maybe here he sounds horrible because he doesn’t take the material too seriously. this particular.
But, seriously, the way he reads… well, picture it: in a high school classroom, a teenage boy grabs a romance novel from a girl’s desk and then, in an attempt to embarrass her for her enjoyment of the joke, he begins to read aloud in an overemphasized emotional tone; yes, that’s about total it. I think the best example of his caricature style – and the moment I was convinced that the producers really should have cut it from the ground up – was the sex scene at the end of chapter 30. Oh. Mine. God. That might be the least surprising thing I’ve ever heard in my life.
Seriously, this is not a close call; it’s really, really terrible. The only reason I give the performance two stars is because the female narrator, while not exceptional, is not bad either.
