Binti By Nnedi Okorafor
Binti is the first science fiction book in the Binti series by author Nnedi Okorafor. Author Winner of the Hugo Award and Nebula Award for Best Novel. Her name is Binti, the first of the Himba to be invited to study at Oomza University, the best institution of higher learning in the galaxy. But accepting the offer means giving up her place in the family to travel interstellarly among strangers who don’t get her way or respect her customs.
Knowledge comes with a price Binti is willing to pay but her journey will not be easy. The world she seeks to enter has long been at war with the Meduse, the alien race that has turned into a nightmare. Oomza University sent Meduse, and Binti’s brilliant travels put her in their deadly sights.
If Binti is to survive the legacy of a war not caused by her, she needs both the gifts from her people and the wisdom stored within the University itself.
Here are some comments from readers to better understand this good audiobooks:
01- Nnedi Okorafor’s sci-fi novella Binti is a suspenseful and exhilarating book that plunges you deep into a futuristic world. The story is about spaceships that are living creatures and humans in many space civilizations. It takes you into the mind and life of Binti, a Himba girl who grew up in the deserts of Africa who has an exceptional talent for advanced mathematics. Binti’s talent makes her a master harmonizer and astronomical producer. But her talent also helped her get a place at the famous Oomza University, located in a place far from Earth.
Binti really wants to go to Oomza Uni. When she boarded the spaceship that would take her to university, it was an important decision. Her trip takes a violent turn when the ship is attacked and Binti’s struggle to survive makes for a thought-provoking and engaging film. Okorafor deftly immerses the reader in her futuristic verse, providing you with just enough of a way to craft a captivating world.
02-There isn’t any place to build the world. Binti’s home world flips through for a few pages, Binti’s first trip on a spaceship doesn’t get any better until everyone dies and some strange aliens show up. Binti’s genetic prowess is included without explanation, and it’s not enough here to provide a complete background on who they are and why they pose a threat other than the whole murder thing. .
It’s an interesting premise, but it ends up feeling poorly managed and the set of disjointed scenes hides something that could have been better. This being a full-fledged novel it might be more suitable for me, but since it has no depth.
