Dragonsdawn is a science fiction book in the Dragonriders of Pern series by author Anne McCaffrey.
The beautiful planet Pern seemed like heaven to its new colonists when unimaginable terror turned it into hell. Deadly spores fell like silver threads from the sky, devouring everything – and everyone – in their path. It was cut off from Earth, and lacking the resources to fight the threat, perished.

Some of the colonists noticed that the small, dragon-like lizards that inhabited their new world were joining the fight against Thread, breathing fire into it and teleporting to safety. The dragonets are large enough for a human to ride and smart enough to work as a team with one rider.

They put their most talented geneticist to work creating the creatures Pern desperately needed – the Dragons.
This is a novel by Pern and you don’t have to read any of the previous books to understand or enjoy it. The sci-fi book of the series, with lots of space flights and genetic engineering.
