Earthlings followed after Natsuki. A girl she’d always remembered, never quite so well. In her family, she is an outcast; and they never missed a moment to remind her of that fact. The book opens with 11-year-old Natsuki arriving with his family for an annual Summer gathering at his grandparents’ house in the mountains of rural Japan.
Her parents are very fond of her sister, and her best friend is a plush toy hedgehog named Piyyut, who explains to her that he is from the planet Popinpobopia on a special mission to Help her save the Earth.

Every summer, Natsuki counts down the days until her family drives to the mountains of Nagano to visit her grandparents in their bungalow in the woods, a place no different from her gray commuter town. One summer, her cousin Yuu confided in Natsuki that he was an extraterrestrial and every night he searched the sky for a spaceship that could take him back to his home planet. Natsuki wonders if she could be an alien.

Natsuki is berated or ignored and even hounded by a young teacher at her cram school. While growing up in a violent, hostile world, she comforts herself with memories of her time with Yuu and discovers an incredible hidden strength within.
