Robyn Hobb writes great books. Forest mage is no exception, but there’s a reason it’s received so many mixed reviews.
The first book in the son trilogy made a big impression on me. It has Hobb’s lively mix of great characters, incredible action, surprising twists, and deep feelings. The original of the scene is also refreshed. I was hoping for this more in Forest Mage.
What I got instead was another book with great characters and a deep story, but it was very difficult to read and finish.
The book’s protagonist Nevarre suffers from the terrible side effects (or at least that’s how people steal them) of his plague. This is the key to the plot and propels Nevarre throughout the novel. Unlike in the first book (or any of Hobb’s other books), Nevarre’s greatest enemy is his own self-loathing. This is of course fueled by the prejudices and actions of his family, friends and faithful people. I know Hobb’s other books have dark moments, but this is a very different kind of darkness.
