Hornblower and the “Atropos” – Audiobook Online
Hornblower and the “Atropos” is a literary fiction book by author C.S. Forester.
After a modest incident on a boat in the Cotswolds, young Captain Horatio Hornblower arrives in London to take command of the Atropos. A 22-gun gun just big enough to need a captain. Her first assignment under Hornblower’s command was to be flagship for Lord Nelson’s funeral. Atropos was part of the Mediterranean Fleet’s Napoléon raid, recovering treasure deep in Turkish waters and challenging a Spanish frigate many times its size. At the heart of each adventure is Hornblower, Forrester’s most inspiring creation, whose blend of careful preparation and spirited execution dazzles friends as well as enemies.
Patrick Manee narrates ridiculously ridiculous. He reads painfully slowly and repeatedly goes into weird singsong mode, stretching vowels to ridiculous levels when reading dialogue. Maybe it’s okay to start off with a rustic barge-driver’s speech; but it’s completely out of place that Hornblower is said to be capturing orders during a crisis. Christian Rodska, the narrator of many of Hornblower’s other novels, is consistently excellent, and his performance shines even brighter than this rendering.
I found the story disappointing as well. Even though it’s abridged, uninteresting scenes seem drawn: for example, the opening journey down canals and rivers to London. It is not a patch for Lieutenant Hornblower or Mr Midshipman Hornblower.
