A clever, deconstructed romantic comedy that proves that in real life, “girl meets boy” doesn’t mean “happily ever after.”
Audrey is out of romance. While dealing with her parents’ controversial divorce, her own breakup, and the dynamics of changing friendships, she has every reason to feel skeptical. She then meets her colleague Harry at the local cinema. He is short-tempered, impulsive, and flirtatious. And though Audrey tries to resist, she finds herself mesmerized by his charm. In this humorous, poignant, and poignant novel, love — and life — is unlike in the movies.

In my opinion, Holly Bourne’s It Only Happens in the Movies is a book that has a lot of potential but doesn’t deliver. I love the feminist messages as well as the independent cinema scene, but I have trouble connecting with the main characters. Also, I’m not a big fan of books where the message is clearly presented and constantly pushes the reader, and that’s what happened in this case. While this is not my favorite, there are still some aspects that I find interesting and those interested in books about cinema, feminism and mental health might enjoy it.

This book tells the story of a girl who was frustrated with the portrayal of relationships in the movies and she got a job at an independent cinema as a way to escape from home. Also working at the cinema is a boy who is making his own zombie movie, and what follows is a romance unlike in the movies. I loved the indie cinema setting as well as the scenes where Harry and Audrey actually made the film, and the book challenged many of the popular romances. This is a feminist story that feels realistic, and it’s a new take on a romantic comedy.
