Journey Through the Underdark is a literary fiction book by author Alston Sleet.
Eric wants to be a bartender, like his adoptive father. He runs the family inn and enjoys his little corner of the world. His dream is not adventure or power.
His dream did not come true. The bastard of Lord EarthScorn. He has a Knack, which means he will have to train as a wizard for the council. He will have to protect the kingdom from the evils of the outside world.

Magic comes with benefits; power, long life, money. Eric doesn’t want any of that. His time at the magic academy only reinforced his views on magic and the realm. He didn’t want to compete with old men who had lived longer than they should. He doesn’t want to be demoted to a distant outpost where he will fight for the sake of those old men.

The alternative is potentially worse, running away from wars, running away from home and escaping through the most dangerous place in the kingdom.

I love this kind of story. The story started off a bit darker than I expected, but it still kept me hooked. When I first raised my head while reading, I realized that a few hours had passed as I flipped through the chapters quickly! Now that I’ve finished the story, I’m very much looking forward to the future books to read with excitement when they come out.

There are a few typos that I’ve discovered and that I’ve flagged for review in the hopes that they’ll be fixed by the time the next reader reads them.
