Keep the Midnight Out/ DSI William Lorimer, Book 12 – Audiobook Online

Keep the Midnight Out is the 12th mystery novel in the DSI William Lorimer series by Alex Gray.
When the body of a red-haired young man washes up on the shores of the beautiful Isle of Mull, Detective Director Lorimer’s quiet vacation from the dusty streets of Glasgow is brutally interrupted. The body was tied with ropes in a strange and grisly position that reminded Lorimer of another murder. A case happened 20 years ago in Glasgow that he failed to solve as a new official sheriff and this has haunted him ever since.

Local police officer DI Stevie Crozier is in charge of the murder investigation on the island, Lorimer tries to avoid stepping on her foot. As the similarities between the young man’s death and his chilling case become clearer, Lorimer realizes that there may be a serial killer on the run after all these years.

When Keep the Midnight Out switches abruptly between the murder of Mull and the chilling Glasgow case two decades ago.
DC Lorimer tries his best to catch a cold-blooded killer. Has someone gotten away with murder for decades?

Unlike some reviewers, I enjoyed Keep The Midnight Out. Mull’s background, a glimpse into Bill Lorimer’s early days as a detective and his failure to lead the investigation offers a fresh perspective and despite their childless status is a recurring theme but it really has to do with the plot in this novel.
Bill and Maggie are on vacation in Mull when they come across the body of a young man, murdered and dumped in the water. For Lorimer, this brought back memories of a similar unsolved murder 20 years ago. The SIO, DI Stevie Crozier, was not interested in any of the contributions Lorimer had to make and thought, contrary to the evidence, that he wanted to usurp her position and control the investigation.
The story alternates between today’s investigation and 20-year-old Lorimer’s investigation that goes nowhere as he has to quit his job to take care of Maggie when she suffers a miscarriage. I found these scenes very sad and emotional and I think Miss Gray handled them very well. Today’s Inquiry has all the twists and turns needed to keep you guessing and turning pages although I think the resolution is a bit weak
