Liar & Spy is a children’s book by author Rebecca Stead.
Liar & Spy is an inspiring, often humorous tale of fate, goofy wit and bravery.
When seventh grader Georges (the silent S) moves into an apartment building in Brooklyn, he meets Safer, a 12-year-old coffee addict who appoints himself as a spy. Georges becomes Safer’s first new agent. His mission? Follow the mysterious Mr. X, who lives in the apartment upstairs. As Safer becomes more demanding, Georges begins to wonder: how far is too far for your only friend?
The Liar & the Spy is a coming-of-age story disguised as a mystery. Some mystery, really.
Rebecca Stead finds something interesting in everything, be it Benjamin Franklin’s reformed alphabet, special fortune cookies or human language. It’s hard to say where Rebecca ends and Georges begins. I suspect that a little bit of Rebecca and Georges lives in all of us. The reason why this book is like spending time with an old friend.
Wait until you hear Jesse Bernstein describe Safer. It’s a prank game. It’s a strange expression, if you think about it. I wonder what Georges would say about it…
