Lonesome Dove – Free Online Audiobook
Lonesome Dove is the first literary fiction book in the Lonesome Dove Saga series by author Larry McMurtry.
A love story, an adventure and an epic about the frontier, Larry McMurtry’s Pulitzer Prize-winning classic. Lonesome Dove is the greatest novel ever written about America’s last defiant wilderness.
Journey to the dusty little Texas town of Lonesome Dove and meet a host of heroes and outlaws, prostitutes and women, Indians and settlers.
This newly remastered audio version is expertly read by actor Lee Horsley, best known for his starring roles in the TV series Nero Wolfe, Matt Houston and Paradise.
The novel is set in the American West after the Civil War. The main characters, Woodrow Call and Augustus “Gus” McCrae, are former Texas Rangers who retired a decade ago and spent alternate years in the tiny Texas town of Lonesome Dove. Nominally, they run the Hat Creek Cattle Company with some of their former teammates (and two green pigs, who ate a snake). But mostly they just wasted hours.
This part of the story is easy, enjoyable read. McMurtry writes in the omniscient third person, meandering from character to character and bringing them to life quickly and completely. Calling a workaholic is prone to brooding. (“Send Call a complaint,” we heard early on, “although silly, and he will save it like money.”) Gus is talkative and lazy. Pea Eye is simple but sure. Deets is as reliable as he is quirky (he sews pants out of quilts). Newt was young and hungry to please.
Even the supporting characters have outstanding characteristics. Lippy” is so named because his lower lip is about the size of the flap on a saddle bag. He can fit enough inhalers down there to last the average person for at least a month; In general, the lips live a life of their own, there towards the bottom of the face. Even when he just sat quietly, studying his cards, his lips moved and wiggled as if a breeze were blowing.” And Joe “has a habit of looking straight ahead. Although Call assumes he has a neck joint like other men, he has never seen him use it.”
