Love, Kurt/ The Vonnegut Love Letters, 1941-1945 – Audiobook Online

Love, Kurt is a book about Kurt Vonnegut’s never-before-seen love letter to his first wife, Jane, compiled and edited by their daughter.
Kurt Vonnegut’s eldest daughter, Edith, was cleaning out her mother’s attic when she came across an old dusty box. She discovers an unexpected treasure: more than 200 love letters Kurt wrote to Jane, spanning the early years of their relationship.

The letters, which began in 1941, after old school friends reunited at the age of 19, ignited a passionate summer romance and promised to stay in touch when they transferred to their respective universities. They did, thanks to Jane’s hard work and Kurt’s attempt to pass chemistry. The letters continued after Kurt dropped out and enlisted in the army in 1943, while Jane graduated and worked for the Office of Strategic Services in Washington, D.C. Kurt was deployed to Europe in 1944, where he was taken prisoner and declared missing in action, and he eventually returned home safely to the couple’s marriage in 1945.

“Love, Kurt” will appeal to Vonnegut lovers, lovers of books about the great writers during their apprenticeship years, and lovers of intense love stories. Happily I got all three.

In 1941, 19-year-old Kurt was completely smitten with beautiful Jane Cox and showered her with a series of passionate letters over the course of five years. Not only does he love Jane, he loves her with an exponential explosion. His sentence jig, somersault, and rocket. And he’s funny. This vibrant young man wrote in a powerful, sarcastic, edgy voice that has become the hallmark of his best books.

One disappointment was that we didn’t hear from Jane until the end, and after that there were only two letters (the only ones found by her daughter and editor Edie), one addressed to her. Kurt and one addressed to a prospective literary author praising Kurt’s gifts. However, those two words sparkled like sunshine on dew. At that point in their young lives (he had just been discharged from the army after surviving the Dresden bombing as a prisoner of war), Jane was a brilliant scholar with literary dreams of her own. .
