Connell and Marianne grew up in the same small town, but the similarities stop there. At school, Connell was popular and loved by many, while Marianne was a loner. But when the two start a conversation – clumsy but exhilarating – something life-changing begins.

A year later, they both attended Trinity College in Dublin. Marianne has stepped into a new social world while Connell stands on the sidelines, shy and uncertain. During their college years, Marianne and Connell swirled around each other, diverging toward other people and other possibilities but always attracted to each other by magnets, irresistible. And as she self-destructs and he begins to look for meaning elsewhere, each must face how far they are willing to go to save the other.

Ordinary People is a story of mutual fascination, friendship and love. It takes us from that first conversation to the years that follow, in the companionship of two people who try to distance themselves but realize they can’t. Praise ordinary people

“[A] novel requires compulsive reading, in one sitting.” (Washington Posts)

“Arguably the most sensational novel of the season, Sally Rooney’s elegant sophomore endeavor…is a worthy successor to Conversations with Friends. Here, again, she She explores the dynamics of the classroom and young love in a witty and nuanced way.” (Wall Street Journal)

“[Rooney] has been hailed as the first great novelist of the millennium with her tales of love and belated capitalism…. [She writes] several passages against Best dialogue I’ve read.” (New Yorkers)

I was on the fence about this book. I’m glad I gave it a chance. I can’t stop thinking about it. I have read reviews, which repeatedly mention that the plot is depressing and agitated. However, I realized it was only 7 hours long, which for my job, is only a couple of days to listen, so I decided to give it a try, thinking there might be something interesting because of all the music. good reviews and its place on the “best” list.

I understand why it is a decisive book. I don’t think it’s fair to say that this book sucks just because it doesn’t make you feel good or happy. There are parts of this book that annoy me, but it’s important to get over it. There were parts where I felt uncomfortable and others it was almost like being in an emotional fog. As readers, I don’t think we can judge a book as good or bad based on whether we like it, whether it’s satisfying, or if it explains everything. If you want that, go see a good movie. This is a book, it is a difficult book, sometimes it is frustrating and sometimes transcendent. And in the end, you are almost left there to figure out what it means. I think the end of this book tells us more about who we are as readers than anything about the plot. Plot hardly matters. This book is more emotional.

Other thoughts:
-Great narration. It can be a bit slow so sometimes I speed it up to 1.25x which is better for me.
-If you are interested in non-traditional gender dynamics or economic and social politics, you will love this
-Incredible dialogue and writing
-Can be activated at times. The scene with the photographer made me sick but I think it was a turning point for one of the characters
-I can’t believe how Connell, who barely speaks, is such an incredibly complex character and one of the most deeply emotional characters I’ve ever read. I can’t believe he’s not a real person. Props to sally rooney.

I can’t stop thinking about this book. It really stays with you, like you’ve witnessed something incredibly intimate. Read it, and if you hate it, return it. I highly recommend reading it if you want some good literature at the cost of an emotional, exhausting, and difficult roller coaster ride.

(this is the longest review I’ve ever written about audio! I blame the book!)
