Occupied Earth is the second science fiction book in the Ascension Wars series by author Jasper T. Scott.
Captain Clayton Cross and his crew encounter the Kyra, an advanced race of avian carnivores. They fled this first encounter, but the Kyra defeated them to return to Earth for nearly a century.

Earth lost the battle in just a few weeks. Our cities burned, and billions died. After we surrendered, the Kyra helped us rebuild, but on their terms, keeping us in the city centers and building high walls to keep us there.

The Kyra teach our children and encourage them to overcome a virus that turns them into Chimera. These hybrids are sent to fight Kyra’s enemies, but only half of the ascensions succeed. The losers become Scum, left to roam the Waste like mindless predators.

Determined to fight Kyra in any way possible, Clayton is teaming up with the human resistance, and now they have a plan to either end the occupation, or end us….

I almost didn’t read this book because I was so impressed with the first book in the series. But the writing here is much better and the structure and plot make a lot more sense, even if it still has some issues.
The main problem with the first book is that it doesn’t make much sense and, at least to me, seems pretty unbelievable. Yes, I know, it’s science fiction. But an alien somehow conceived a human through mere contact, then created some human/alien hybrid. Sorry, I just didn’t buy it. The writing is also extremely clumsy and the tempo is very uneven. The endless page describes several actions. Some major events are abbreviated in a few pages.
Thankfully, this book is much better and more like the straightforward treatment of humans and aliens, with carnivorous creatures like zombies brought in for good measure.
