Old Man’s War is the first science fiction book in the series by author John Scalzi.
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First, he visited his wife’s grave. Then he joined the army.
The good news is that humanity has finally entered interstellar space. The bad news is that habitable planets are scarce – and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. John Perry is working on that deal. He had only the vaguest idea of ​​what to expect.

Old Man’s War by John Scalzi was the first book I downloaded with my Audible subscription because I’ve heard from various sources (including the Sword and Laser podcast) that it’s a good read. I must say, after reading the novel, I completely agree. Old Man’s War is one of the best novels I’ve read all year. I would even go as far as to say that it is one of my favorite sci-fi novels.

From the very beginning, I was really captivated by the pretentiousness of the story. In some future America, elderly people are recruited to enlist and serve in the intergalactic army. With so many novels about a young protagonist (and even many adult novels), I found reading a novel with a 75-year-old protagonist a very refreshing experience.

Also, I really like Scalzi’s writing style. It has the right mix of dry wit and cynicism to really impress me. I should also give that credit to William Dufris, the narrator of the audio version I heard. I think he did a great job. His tone is perfect for the main characters of the novel.
