Online Free – Friends, Lovers, Chocolate/ The Sunday Philosophy Club, Book 2
Friends, Lovers, Chocolate is the second mystery book in the Isabel Dalhousie Series by Alexander McCall Smith.
Isabel Dalhousie, editor of the Journal of Applied Ethics, is caught up in a love affair of hearts, this is a transplant.
When Isabel’s niece, Cat, asks Isabel to run her gourmet restaurant while she attends a wedding in Italy, Isabel meets a man with the most interesting problem. He gets a heart transplant and suddenly suffers from memories of events that never happened to him. The situation appeals to Isabel as a philosophical question: Is the heart really the seat of the soul? Are the memories related to the donor’s death? Of course, Grace, Isabel’s no-nonsense housekeeper, and Isabel’s friend Jamie, assume that’s none of Isabel’s business. Meanwhile, Cat brings home an Italian lottery, who, for all Isabel knows of Italian lotteries, should not be trusted.
That makes two mysteries of the heart solved, just the thing for Isabel Dalhousie.
The second book in the Sunday Philosophy Club finds Isabel covering for Cat in her snack bar. During a break, Isabel meets a man with a curious philosophical dilemma; he is a heart transplant recipient and he may be experiencing memories from the donor. Most worrisome are memories of a possible crash and runaway driver that killed the donor.
Isabel became quite intrigued by the concept and began to delve into the situation. While discussing the situation with her housekeeper, Grace, she was persuaded by Grace to go to a meeting of psychics with her, where Grace had a crush on a man who regularly attended meetings. Cat returns from her trip with an elderly Italian man who, after Cat’s attempt to politely dismiss him, tries to bond with Isabel.
Jamie, another friend and confidant of Isabel, is still trying to get over Cat, and gets involved with a married woman. The story of the memory of the heart is intertwined with the relationships surrounding Isabel. As in the previous book, the mystery is more philosophical than dramatic, and again the Philosophers Club practically never meets. It’s an interesting story on many levels.
