Parable of the Sower By: Octavia E. Butler – Free Online
Parable of the Sower is a science fiction book by author Octavia E. Butler.
Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author, Octavia E. Butler, paints a stunning portrait of an entirely believable near future. Like Kindred and other critically acclaimed novels, The Parable of the Sower skillfully combines visionary concepts and social reality.
God is change. That is the central truth of the Earthseed movement, whose prophet is not certain to be 18-year-old Lauren Olamin. The young woman’s diary entries tell the story of her life amid the violent inferno of the 21st century with walled neighborhoods and crazed drug addicts – while also revealing Earthseed’s philosophy her developing. Amidst the horrors emerges a message of hope: if we are willing to accept divine change, we will survive to fulfill our interstellar mission.
The Parable of the Sower is a wonderfully constructed vision of the world after the climate-related collapse of Western society. I mean wonderful in the sense of the world that Octavia Butler made this life inspires me with a real sense of wonder. Science fiction books are supposed to create in the reader a sense of skepticism and longing for the future and what might come with it, and this book does exactly that, while attacking and conquering the world. Covers major themes such as religion and racism. Racism in particular is a topic I’d like to spend quite a bit of time dealing with, but religion is also one that I’ll cover in detail. There are a lot of other details and issues that could be worked out, but these are the two that give me a headache and are also the two that interest me the most as I write. This book is brilliant, engaging, and definitely worth reading more than once.
