Piranesi By: Susanna Clarke – Audiobook Online
Piranesi is a literary fiction book by author Susanna Clarke.
Piranesi lives in the House. Maybe he’s always been like that.
In his notebooks, day after day, he wrote clearly and carefully about its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, thousands upon thousands of statues, the roaring tides stairs, the clouds moved slowly through the halls above. On Tuesdays and Fridays, Piranesi meets his friend, The Other. At other times, he brings tribute food to the Dead. But for the most part, he was alone.
Messages began to appear, written in chalk on the sidewalk. There’s a new person in the House. But who are they and what do they want? Are they friends or do they bring destruction and madness as Others claim?
The lost text must be found, the secret must be discovered. The world Piranesi thought he knew was turning strange and dangerous.
The book is a great combination of Plato, CS Lewis and Borges. I totally agree with the rave reviews. Clarke wrote a masterpiece.
And the response to it is a fascinating social study. Half of the readers who heard it thought the book was genius. The other half thought it was boring, predictable, and pointless. One reviewer described the book as a sequence of random scenes.
It made me wonder, Are we all reading the same book?
Of course not. Each of us brings to it our own experiences. As with all books. But there must be something special going on here for the reviews to be so polarizing. I want to try an explanation.
Piranesi fascinates me because it sparked a lot of my emotions around losing my worldview in my twenties. I can imagine that people who haven’t been through this experience won’t be surprised by the way Clarke has conveyed it. She drew it correctly. She made me relive it.
