Play Dead is the first mystery novel in the Elise Sandberg series by author Anne Frasier.
No one is more familiar with Savannah’s dark side than homicide detective and native Elise Sandburg. She has been haunted for years by her own mysterious past: She was abandoned as a baby in one of the city’s ancient cemeteries, and it is rumored that she is an illegitimate daughter. of a notorious witch doctor Savannah.

The local Gullah culture of witchcraft and magic is something few outsiders can understand, at least Elise’s new partner. Someone is terrorizing the city, creating real-life zombies because victims fall into a state of paralysis that mimics death. As the macabre case unfolds, Elise is drawn into the haunting past she’s been trying so hard to leave behind.

Play Dead’ is a fun game about the zombie genre that is a bit overdone. Frasier goes back to the origins of zombies, skipping over weaponized, scientific zombie creation and looking at the witchcraft/rogue origins of zombie creation. Now, don’t let that fool you, this is not a “horror” novel. Although I originally purchased the book because it was listed as a witchcraft horror novel, it is actually a mystery crime story and the “zombie” are not supernatural beings at all. .

In fact, zombies are really just a side part of the story, and the plot really revolves around the use of the drug TTX (from the puffer fish) which, according to folklore, can be used to create slaves. zombie rule. Much of the plot is fast-paced and engrossing. Frasier has done an excellent job of depicting Southern culture (and witchcraft) and creating a mystery that makes the book hard to put down. You’ll want to know what happens next. With that said, Frasier changes his character’s point of view throughout the book and these become very confusing.
