Polterheist is the fifth science fiction book in the Esther Diamond series by author Laura Resnick.
In the days leading up to Christmas, struggling actress Esther Diamond was working as a singing and dancing elf at Fenster & Co, a large department store in Manhattan.

As if dealing with the holiday shoppers weren’t bad enough, Esther’s near-ex-boyfriend, Detective Connor Lopez, is on the scene investigating a series of truck robberies involving the mobs. looting Fenster’s merchandise. Retired hitman Lucky Battistuzzi is also prowling around, as the mob is outraged at being implicated in heists they didn’t commit. But when things go awry, supernatural Esther realizes this isn’t just an ordinary crazy vacation – it’s time to call her friend Max, Manhattan’s resident magician.

Esther and Max discover that Fenster’s has become the reincarnation of an ancient demon that is plotting to escape from its mystical prison on the winter solstice. When the space barriers fall, can Esther rescue her fellow elves, save her city from demonic catastrophe, and collect wages in time to pay the rent?

Esther Diamond returns to Polterheist and is in the same trouble as before. To pay the rent, she’s working at Fenster & Co, a local department store, as Christmas Elves. In keeping with her background, she is a Jewish Elf.
Some elves and other characters are giving up without notice. They just disappeared without wearing the costume again. Those who have worked in previous Christmas seasons say that this year is different. There is a sense of evil that is not present in the past. Then the props started attacking people. Add to that the problem of the truck carrying goods for the store being robbed.

That brings Detective Connor Lopez to the scene. Once again he and Esther meet again and must save the day. Look for interesting dialogue, great action, and all the great supporting characters in the previous books. The occult is the presence of demons that Esther believes in and Connor does not. That difference adds interest and tension to the story.
