Queen Bee – A Plantation Sequel A Novel, Book 12, Audiobook Online By: Dorothea Benton Frank
“If I could only read one writer for the rest of my life, it would be Dorothea Benton Frank.” (Elin Hilderbrand, New York Times bestselling author)
Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of New York Times bestselling author Dorthea Benton Frank’s Carolina Lowcountry in this evocative story that finally returns to her beloved Sullivan’s Island.
Beekeeper Holly McNee Kensen quietly lives in her own world on Sullivan’s Island, tending to her hive and working at the local island library. Holly calls her mother “Queen Bee” because she is a difficult woman. Her mother, a devoted hypocrite, may not know that she is seriously ill, but that doesn’t stop her from tormenting Holly. To escape the tragedy, Holly’s sister, Leslie, got married and moved elsewhere, wanting nothing to do with island life. Holly’s escape is to immerse herself in the lives of two neighborhood boys and their widowed father, Archie.
Her world turns upside down when the flashier Leslie returns and both sisters, polar opposites, focus on what’s going on in their neighbor’s house. Did Archie really love that terrible ice queen? If Archie marries her, what will happen to his young sons? Leslie anxiously yearned for recognition after a failed marriage, squandering her favors on any and all recipients. Their mother upped her game in a noisy and dramatic downward spiral. The infamous Holly was talking to her honey bees at a mile a minute, as if they would offer her a solution to all the chaos. Maybe they will.
Queen Bee is a classic of Lowcountry Tale, warm, wise and hilarious, filled with humanity and a drop of whodunit added to measure well by an invisible hand. In her 20th novel, Dorothea Benton Frank takes us back to her beloved island with an unforgettable story where the Lowcountry magic of the natural world collides with the beating of the human heart.
I love Dorothea Benton Frank. I’ve never heard the audio of one of her books – I always have a Southern accent in my head…wait! That’s just the way I talk! If I were really like this narrator, I definitely wouldn’t have known it! Her thick! It is a light book. The author has such a visual use of words that you can see the events unfold. Sweet like Southern sweet tea and rich like pecan pie.
Overall rating is good and I would recommend the book. The sarcasm and clever retorts of the Queen and her daughters are truly delightful to hear. The storyline is sweet, romantic and not too predictable, which is good. Readers with her Southern accent are captivating, though I’m not a fan of the way she presents her male voice. Alas, what to expect? After all, she is NOT a male pretender! (Blink)
